What is What? If you're new to band, it can be a little overwhelming. This section is the "what's what" of band to help you navigate the lingo. State and National events/circuits:
Region Region events are lead by TMEA (Texas Music Educator's Association) and allow opportunities for students to perform with students from other schools at the local, area, and state levels. These ensembles are selected through auditions that take place throughout the fall and early spring, and culminate with performances throughout the spring. They are broken up into three main performing ensembles: Jazz - This is the earliest audition of the year, usually taking place at the end of September or early October. Students who audition for the Jazz Band can made it into the district All-Star band, the region jazz band, or advance to audition for the State Jazz Band which is a recording session done after their region audition. If a student makes the State Jazz Band, they will perform at the TMEA State Jazz Band Performance at TMEA. Orchestra - This is not just for strings! This audition takes place in mid November, and depending on the instrumentation, can include a number of wind, brass, and percussion instruments. If a student advances to State, they will perform with the Texas State Orchestra at the TMEA Convention in February. Band - This audition is the largest of the year. It usually takes place in early to mid-December and most instruments have two phases. If students advance, they will audition at the Area level in January, which will decide who makes the Area Band and who makes the State Band. Freshmen have an opportunity to audition for the region band Phase II if they advance from phase I, or audition for the district freshmen region band, which clinic and concert takes place in mid-January. Students may also make the Region Band, which also performs in mid-January, or State Band and perform at the TMEA Convention in February.
Solo and Ensemble Solo and Ensemble is a UIL event in late February. Students can prepare either a solo on their instrument, or prepare a small ensemble with other students and perform for a judge. Participation in this event is a grade for every student in the band. They are allowed to compete in up to two events (2 solos, 2 ensembles, or 1 solo and 1 ensemble), but only need to do one for the grade. If they receive a rating of I, the solo (must be memorized to advance) or ensemble may advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (TSSEC), which takes place in late May in Austin.
